Forward to a friend:

can a child be too attached?

Hello fellow travellers...

Recently, I went out for a friend's birthday and after a couple of hours, I phoned home to check in and heard a sweet little ...'mama, home now'. My immediate heart felt response was to quickly say my good-byes and head home to nurse my toddler to sleep. The evening was lovely and I had no regrets about leaving, yet a friend grabbed my arm and said...."Kris, stay longer. You can't let him be this attached to you. It's just not healthy." I hugged her and left.

Myths and misconceptions abound when it comes to parenting in a way that ensures strong attachment and close connection with your children (what we call Natural Parenting). It seems that putting your child's needs at least equal to your own, if not first, is a rare and unusual thing. Anyone who has embarked on this challenging and extraordinarily meaningful path is sure to run into opposition, questions, even judgment.

So, is it ever possible for a child to be too attached to her parents?

The answer is a resounding NO. There are many wise, educated and experienced folks who can attest to that fact, with research to back it up.

Read our resources page for books on this topic

Children who are raised having their needs for affection, empathy, trust, belonging and acceptance met by consistent and caring adults are capable of not only more fulfilling and healthy longterm relationships, but also more fulfilling and healthy lives. In fact, this commitment may be the most profound and important step we can take to creating a peaceful and sustainable world.

There was such an irony to my well-meaning friend's comment during our evening out...every single woman at that table, whether married or single, had been expressing frustration about their 'dysfunctional' relationships. Hmmmm.
